## Biography

Harry Shannon (13 June 1890 – 27 July 1964) was an American character actor. Born on a farm in Saginaw, Michigan, he began his career in repertory theatre, vaudeville and tent shows before appearing in Broadway musicals including *Oh, Kay!* (1926), *Hold Everything* (1928), *Simple Simon* (1931) and *Pardon My English* (1933). He entered films in the early sound era and became a familiar supporting player, particularly in Westerns.

Shannon appeared in more than 140 films. His credits include *Citizen Kane* (1941) as Kane's father, *High Noon* (1952) as Cooper, *Touch of Evil* (1958) as Chief Gould and *Gypsy* (1962) as the grandfather. He also worked frequently in 1950s television Westerns such as *Cheyenne*, *Have Gun – Will Travel*, *Rawhide* and *Gunsmoke*.
