## Biography

Harry Stradling Jr. was an American cinematographer. Born in Yonkers, New York, on 7 January 1925, he was the son of cinematographer Harry Stradling and the great-nephew of cameraman Walter Stradling. He began his career as a camera assistant and operator, working on films including *Gaslight* (1944), before becoming a director of photography in his own right.

Stradling’s first solo credit as cinematographer was *Welcome to Hard Times* (1967). He went on to shoot numerous Westerns, including six films with director Burt Kennedy such as *Support Your Local Sheriff!* (1969) and *Rooster Cogburn* (1975), as well as *Little Big Man* (1970) for Arthur Penn. He also collaborated with Blake Edwards on four features and photographed *The Way We Were* (1973) and *1776* (1972).

Stradling received Academy Award nominations for best cinematography for *1776* and *The Way We Were*. He was a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and died on 17 October 2017 in Woodland Hills, California.
