## Biography

Harry Stradling Sr. (born Henry A. Stradling) was an American cinematographer active from the 1920s until his death. He was the nephew of cameraman Walter Stradling, who had worked with Mary Pickford, and the father of cinematographer Harry Stradling Jr.

After early work in Hollywood on short subjects and B-movies, Stradling moved to Europe in the early 1930s. He collaborated with Jacques Feyder on films including *Le Grand Jeu* (1934) and *La Kermesse héroïque* (1935). In England he worked on productions such as *Knight Without Armour* (1937), *The Citadel* (1938), *Pygmalion* (1938) and *Jamaica Inn* (1939).

Stradling returned to the United States at the outbreak of the Second World War. He photographed *Mr. & Mrs. Smith* (1941) and *Suspicion* (1941) for Alfred Hitchcock, and later worked on *A Streetcar Named Desire* (1951), *My Fair Lady* (1964), *Funny Girl* (1968) and *Hello, Dolly!* (1969). He received two Academy Awards and fourteen nominations during his career.
