He was born in Kyoto on 25 March 1912 and began his career by joining the Nikkatsu studio in 1925 after leaving school. He later worked at Daiichi Eiga and Shinkō Kinema before becoming freelance. Tanaka appeared in over 250 films across seven decades in both gendaigeki and jidaigeki, often in supporting and character roles. He worked with directors including Yasujirō Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Akira Kurosawa and Mikio Naruse, and was noted for his skill in comic parts. He also appeared in many jidaigeki television productions. His credits include Sakai in *Ikiru* (1952), Tatsuzo Haraguchi in *Good Morning* (1959) and Yatazo in *Floating Weeds* (1959).
