## Biography

Hazel Pethig (born 1944) is a British costume designer for film and television. She was brought up in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and began her career at the BBC. In 1969 she was assigned as costume designer to the sketch series *Monty Python's Flying Circus*, creating the look for its surreal characters including the Gumby figures.

Pethig designed costumes for the Monty Python films *Monty Python and the Holy Grail* (1975) and *Monty Python's Life of Brian* (1979), as well as *Jabberwocky* (1977). She worked on the BBC miniseries *The Singing Detective* (1986), receiving a BAFTA nomination for Best Costume Design. Other credits include *A Fish Called Wanda* (1988) and *Fierce Creatures* (1997). She has also taught on the BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation course at Wimbledon School of Art.
