He made his stage debut in 1948 and co-founded the Nuevo Teatro company in 1950. In 1975, while in Spain for a film festival, he received death threats from the Argentine paramilitary group Triple A and remained in exile there, later acquiring Spanish citizenship. Alterio appeared in numerous films, including *Cría Cuervos* (1976) as Anselmo and *The Official Story* (1985) as Roberto Ibáñez. His other credits include *The Truce* (1974), *The Nest* (1980), *Camila* (1984) and *Son of the Bride* (2001). He was married to Ángela Bacaicoa and was the father of actors Ernesto Alterio and Malena Alterio.
