After the Second World War he trained in Göttingen and began a stage career that included work at theatres in Karlsruhe, Bochum, Basel, Bonn, Hannover and Hamburg. He appeared in numerous films and television productions, including as Greff in *The Tin Drum* (1979) and as Lucas Steiner in *The Last Metro* (1980). He moved to Switzerland in the 1970s and remained there until his death. Bennent was nominated for a César Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in *The Last Metro*.
