## Biography

Helen Deutsch (21 March 1906 – 15 March 1992) was an American screenwriter, journalist and songwriter. Born in New York City, she graduated from Barnard College and began her career managing the Provincetown Players. She later wrote theatre reviews for the New York Herald-Tribune and the New York Times, worked in the press department of the Theatre Guild, and was instrumental in founding the New York Drama Critics Circle in 1934.

Deutsch's first screenplay was for *The Seventh Cross* (1944). She went on to write screenplays for *National Velvet* (1944), *King Solomon's Mines* (1950), *Lili* (1953), *The Unsinkable Molly Brown* (1964) and *Valley of the Dolls* (1967), among others, many for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She also wrote the lyrics for the song "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo" from *Lili*.
