Helen Horton was an American actress. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she studied at Northwestern University, where she formed a lifelong friendship with Patricia Neal. After a brief period working in New York theatre in the mid-1940s, she moved to Britain following her marriage to Hamish Thomson and established a career in British television, radio and theatre.

Horton is known for her voice role as the ship's computer Mother in the 1979 science-fiction film *Alien*. Her other screen credits include *Phase IV* (1974), *Never Take Sweets from a Stranger* (1960), *Endless Night* (1972), *Superman III* (1983) and appearances in series such as *Agatha Christie's Poirot* and *The Benny Hill Show*. She died in 2007. Her granddaughter is the actress Lily James.
