## Biography

Helmut Dantine (born Helmut Guttmann) was an Austrian-American actor. Born in Vienna on 7 October 1918, he emigrated to the United States in 1938 after involvement in anti-Nazi activities and imprisonment following the Anschluss. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and began acting at the Pasadena Playhouse while supporting himself by running gas stations. Warner Bros. signed him to a contract after he was spotted there.

Dantine appeared in numerous films during the 1940s, often in supporting roles as Germans or Nazis. His credits include uncredited parts in *To Be or Not to Be* (1942) and *Casablanca* (1942), the German flyer in *Mrs. Miniver* (1942), the young man in *Watch on the Rhine* (1943), and roles in *Edge of Darkness* (1943), *Mission to Moscow* (1943) and *Passage to Marseille* (1944). Later work included *War and Peace* (1956) as Dolokhov and producing credits on films such as *Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia* (1974). He died in Beverly Hills on 2 May 1982.
