## Biography

Hendrik Sartov (also credited as Hendrick or Henrik Sartov) was a Danish-born cinematographer. Born Hendrik Christian Sartov on 14 March 1885 in Haderslev, Denmark, he emigrated to the United States in 1907 and initially worked as a portrait photographer.

In 1917 Lillian Gish recommended him to director D. W. Griffith, after which he contributed to several Griffith silent films. His credits include cinematography on *Way Down East* (1920) and *Orphans of the Storm* (1921), as well as *Broken Blossoms* (1919) and later titles such as *The Scarlet Letter* (1926). He became a naturalised US citizen in 1926.

Sartov largely retired from cinematography with the advent of sound films and returned to still photography. He died on 21 March 1970 in Glendale, California.
