## Biography

Henri La Barthe was a French journalist, private detective and writer of crime novels and screenplays. He founded the magazine *Détective* in the 1920s and later sold the title to Gallimard. Writing under the pseudonym Détective Ashelbé (or variants such as Julien Ashelbé), he published the novel *Pépé le Moko* in 1931.

La Barthe contributed to the screenplay of Julien Duvivier’s 1937 film adaptation of his novel, which starred Jean Gabin. He also wrote the novel *Dédée d’Anvers* (1939), later adapted for the screen, and other works including *Le Club des aristocrates* and additional screenplays. He was the grandfather of the singer and writer Thierry Tuborg.
