## Biography

Henric Hirsch (13 November 1923 – March 1999) was a Hungarian-Romanian theatre and television director. Born in Cluj, Romania, he worked as a theatre director in Hungary before fleeing to England following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. He completed the BBC's directors' course and began directing television in 1964.

His first television assignment was an episode of the anthology series *First Night*. Producer Verity Lambert then offered him the direction of the *Doctor Who* serial *The Reign of Terror* (1964). Hirsch found the production gruelling and fell ill during filming of the third episode, though he recovered to direct the remainder. He subsequently directed episodes of anthology series including *The Wednesday Play* and *Theatre 625*, as well as ITV soap operas such as *Crossroads* and *Emmerdale Farm* (1973). He also worked as a translator of Romanian and Hungarian plays for the stage.
