## Fi1m on Henry Lloyd-Hughes

> Henry Lloyd-Hughes is good at making unpleasant men convincing, from the school bully in *The Inbetweeners* to the controlling Aaron Peel in *Killing Eve*. We rate that capacity for menace; we would welcome more parts that ask something else of him.

Mark Donovan, the school bully in *The Inbetweeners* (2008), gives the boys something to fear beyond their own embarrassment. Henry Lloyd-Hughes is well suited to the part, making an unpleasant character convincing without asking us to find him fascinating. The four leads do most of the comic work in Damon Beesley and Iain Morris’s series, but a credible bully gives them something to react against. We rate the comedy highly, despite its narrow view of girls; Lloyd-Hughes has a specific job within it and does it well.

Period drama brought different positions of authority, including Ralph Whelan, Private Secretary to the Viceroy, in *Indian Summers* (2015). That was his first major television lead, following work in literary adaptations including *Anna Karenina* (2012). Aaron Peel, the controlling antagonist in *Killing Eve* (2019), makes more direct use of his aptitude for menace. His Sherlock Holmes in *The Irregulars* (2021) is a gaunt figure conscious of his own myth. We would welcome more opportunities for him beyond threatening people; the succession of unpleasant men risks making an effective actor predictable.

*The Thursday Murder Club* (2025) gives him Bogdan, a builder among the suspects, but the case does little to make any of them matter. Chris Columbus has excellent company in Mirren, Brosnan, Kingsley and Imrie, yet the interviews proceed with tea between and no convincing danger. We stopped caring who had done it because nobody behaved as though they had reason to be afraid. Suzanne Heathcote and Katy Brand’s screenplay gives its suspects too little urgency. There is only so much an actor can do while waiting to be interviewed.

In *Disclosure Day* (2026), he plays Casper Boyd in Spielberg’s fluently made but overlong alien conspiracy chase. Emily Blunt gives that film much of its pleasure, while the second-hand mystery limits our enthusiasm. Neither film is a compelling reason to seek him out, though neither changes what his stronger roles suggest he can do. We would start with *The Inbetweeners*, rather than with the bigger names surrounding him in the films.
