Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is an American historian, literary critic and filmmaker. He serves as the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University.

Gates has appeared as himself in several films and television series. These include the documentary *13th* (2016), in which he is credited as Self, the HBO series *Watchmen* (2019) as Skip Gates, and an episode of *The Simpsons* (2023) voicing himself. He has also hosted and produced numerous PBS documentary series on African American history and genealogy.
