## Biography

Henry Myers (1893–1975) was an American writer, lyricist and screenwriter. Born in Chicago, he moved to New York City as an infant. He studied piano and composition at the Damrosch Music School and under Rubin Goldmark, and briefly continued his studies in Berlin before the outbreak of the First World War.

Myers began writing for the stage in the 1920s. His first play, *The First Fifty Years*, was produced in New York in 1922. In 1930 he moved to California on a writing contract with Paramount Pictures and remained there for nearly two decades. His screenplays include *Her Wedding Night* (1930), *Million Dollar Legs* (1932), *The Black Room* (1935) and *Destry Rides Again* (1939). He collaborated frequently with Jay Gorney and was a founding member of the Screen Writers Guild.

Myers left Hollywood in 1947 and returned to New York, where he wrote historical novels including *The Utmost Island* (1951). He also produced stage works and taught novel writing at New York University.
