He began his career on the stage after leaving college to join a travelling theatre company. He served in the military during the First World War, returned to acting in 1919 and made his Broadway debut in 1921. His stage work continued into the early 1930s before he moved into films. O'Neill's screen credits include *Flirtation Walk* (1934), *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937), *Jezebel* (1938), *They Drive by Night* (1940), *Anchors Aweigh* (1945) and *The Reckless Moment* (1949). His final film was *The Wings of Eagles* (1957).
