## Biography

Henry Skjær (1899–1991) was a Danish opera singer and actor. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the opera school of the Royal Danish Theatre while working as a clerk. He made his stage debut in 1924 as Pizarro in Beethoven's *Fidelio* and joined the Royal Danish Theatre as a permanent member in 1930, remaining until his retirement in 1973. Among his principal roles was the Count in Mozart's *The Marriage of Figaro*, which he performed nearly 200 times.

Skjær appeared in a number of Danish films and television productions, often in supporting parts. These included the role of the Doctor in Carl Theodor Dreyer's *Ordet* (1955) and an opera singer in *For Freedom and Justice* (1949). He was appointed Royal Chamber Singer in 1947 and received the Order of the Dannebrog.
