He appeared in over 90 films between 1917 and 1951. His roles included Sir Joseph Banks in *Mutiny on the Bounty* (1935) and Lord Willoughby in *Captain Blood* (1935). Born in Grenada, British West Indies, to British parents, Stephenson was educated in England. He began acting in his twenties and made his Broadway debut in 1901 in *A Message from Mars*. He performed in more than 30 Broadway productions before moving into film work. Stephenson appeared in several films with Errol Flynn, including *The Charge of the Light Brigade* (1936), *The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex* (1939) and *The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes* (1939). He was married to actress Ann Shoemaker and had one daughter.
