## Biography

Herbert Anderson (30 March 1917 – 11 June 1994) was an American character actor from Oakland, California. He began his career in the early 1940s with minor roles at Warner Bros. before gaining notice in films such as *Navy Blues* (1941) and *The Male Animal* (1942).

Anderson appeared in *Battleground* (1949) as Hansan. He also performed on Broadway as Dr. Bird in *The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial* and reprised a role in the 1954 film adaptation of *The Caine Mutiny*. His best-known role was as Henry Mitchell, the father in the CBS sitcom *Dennis the Menace* (1959–1963). He made numerous guest appearances on television series including *I Dream of Jeannie*, *Bewitched* and *Batman*, and retired from acting in the early 1980s.
