## Biography

Herbert 'Cowboy' Coward was an American actor best known for playing the Toothless Man, one of two mountain men, in John Boorman's 1972 film *Deliverance*.

He began performing as a gunfighter at the Ghost Town in the Sky Wild West amusement park in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, where he met Burt Reynolds. Reynolds later recommended him for the role in *Deliverance*; Coward, who had no formal acting training, was cast after an audition and performed his own stunts. He later worked for 27 years at a factory in Asheville, North Carolina.

Coward appeared in the 2007 film *Ghost Town: The Movie* and the 2013 television series *Hillbilly Blood*. He died on 24 January 2024 in a motor vehicle accident in Haywood County, North Carolina, aged 85.
