## Biography

Herbert Smith (30 June 1901 – 4 February 1986) was a British film producer, director and production executive. He began in production with G.B. Samuelson and joined Paramount British before moving in 1932 to British Lion Films, where he worked with his elder brother Sam. He later became production supervisor at Beaconsfield Studios and executive in charge of production at Denham Studios.

Smith directed a number of films in the 1930s, including *On the Air* (1934) and *Around the Town* (1938). He produced or held executive producer roles on many titles, often uncredited, among them *In Which We Serve* (1942), *Henry V* (1944), *Odd Man Out* (1947) and *Hamlet* (1948). Later credits include *The Tommy Steele Story* (1957), the television series *Six-Five Special* (1958) and his final film *Too Young to Love* (1960).
