## Biography

Herman J. Mankiewicz was an American screenwriter and journalist. Born in New York City, he worked as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune in Berlin and later as a drama critic for The New York Times and The New Yorker before moving to Hollywood in the mid-1920s.

He is best known for co-writing the screenplay for *Citizen Kane* (1941) with Orson Welles; the pair received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Mankiewicz also contributed to *Dinner at Eight* (1933), *The Pride of the Yankees* (1942) and numerous other films, often working uncredited to revise scripts. He was the older brother of director and screenwriter Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
