## Biography

Hermann Warm was a German film art director and production designer. Born in Berlin, he trained in stage design in Düsseldorf and at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin, and worked as a theatrical designer and painter before entering the film industry around 1912–13.

He became a key figure in German expressionist cinema of the 1920s. Warm collaborated with Walter Reimann and Walter Röhrig on the painted, distorted sets for Robert Wiene’s *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* (1920). He worked on several Fritz Lang films, including *Destiny* (1921), and with F. W. Murnau on *Phantom* (1922) and *Schloss Vogelöd* (1921). He also contributed to Carl Theodor Dreyer’s *The Passion of Joan of Arc* (1928) and *Vampyr* (1932).

During the Second World War Warm lived in Switzerland and returned to Germany in 1947. He continued working on films until the late 1950s, including *Wozzeck* (1947).
