Her restrained work with Victor Sjöström is where to begin; the later servants and wise old women too often gave her less to do. As Mrs Holm in *The Phantom Carriage* (1921), Hilda Borgström makes a suffering wife credible through restraint. Victor Sjöström’s ghost story has double exposures to unsettle us; she has the less conspicuous job of making its hardship matter. We were frightened because the effects brought human suffering close, and her performance helps keep our attention on the people caught up in it.
