## Biography

Holmes Herbert (born Horace Edward Jenner) was an English character actor who appeared in Hollywood films from 1915 to 1952. He emigrated to the United States in 1912 and never made a film in his native country. He began with leading roles in the silent era before taking numerous supporting parts in sound films.

He is credited in *The House of Rothschild* (1934) as Rowerth. Among his other roles were Dr John Lanyon in *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1931), the Chief of Police in *The Invisible Man* (1933), Captain Gardner in *Captain Blood* (1935), the Assistant Commissioner in *Foreign Correspondent* (1940) and appearances in several Universal Sherlock Holmes films. Herbert also featured in horror productions including *Mystery of the Wax Museum* (1933), *The Ghost of Frankenstein* (1942) and *The Mummy's Curse* (1944). He retired in 1952 and died in Hollywood, California, in 1956.
