## Biography

Howard Dimsdale was an American screenwriter. He received his first screen credits in the early 1940s and worked on feature films including *Somewhere in the Night* (1946), *A Lady Without Passport* (1950) and *The Train* (1964).

In 1950 he was identified as a Communist sympathizer before the House Un-American Activities Committee and was blacklisted for around twenty years. During this period he wrote under the pseudonym Arthur Dales (also credited as Arthur Howard Dales) for series such as *Gunsmoke*, *Mannix* and *The Fugitive* (1963). He resumed credited work in the early 1970s, contributing to *Medical Center*, *Planet of the Apes* (1974), *Quincy, M.E.* and *The Six Million Dollar Man* (1974), and later taught screenwriting at the American Film Institute.

Dimsdale died on 27 August 1991 in Los Angeles, aged 77.
