## Biography

Howard Greer (1896–1974) was an American fashion and costume designer active in Hollywood during the studio era. He began his career as a sketch artist for Lucile (Lady Duff Gordon) in New York and Chicago, then worked in Paris for designers including Paul Poiret and Edward Molyneux after serving in the First World War. In 1923 he joined Famous Players-Lasky (later Paramount) as chief costume designer, later establishing his own couture salon, Greer Inc., in Hollywood in 1927.

Greer supplied personal wardrobes to stars including Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson and Katharine Hepburn, and continued freelance film work into the 1950s. His credited designs include gowns for Hepburn in *Bringing Up Baby* (1938) and for Irene Dunne in *My Favorite Wife* (1940), as well as contributions to *Spellbound* (1945), *Holiday Affair* (1949) and *His Kind of Woman* (1951). He published the autobiography *Designing Male* in 1951 and retired in 1962.
