## Biography

Howard Hughes (1905–1976) was an American film producer and director. He entered the film industry in the mid-1920s after inheriting his family's business interests and moved to Hollywood, where he founded the Caddo Company.

Hughes produced several notable films, including *Hell's Angels* (1930), which he also directed, *The Front Page* (1931), *Scarface* (1932) and *The Outlaw* (1943), which he both produced and directed. His productions were often marked by high budgets, technical innovation and conflicts with censors. He later acquired a controlling interest in RKO Pictures in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
