## Biography

Howard Lindsay, born Herman Nelke, was an American playwright, librettist, director, actor and theatrical producer. He wrote the screenplay for the 1936 musical *Swing Time* with Allan Scott.

Lindsay is best known for his long collaboration with Russel Crouse. Their plays include *Life With Father* (1939), in which he starred opposite his wife Dorothy Stickney, the Pulitzer Prize-winning *State of the Union* (1945) and the book for the musical *The Sound of Music* (1959). He also appeared in the 1957 television production of *Cinderella*.
