## Biography

Howard Shoup was an American costume designer. He was born Conway Howard Shoup on 29 August 1903 in Dallas, Texas, and died on 29 May 1987 in Los Angeles, California.

Shoup worked on more than 170 films between 1937 and 1967, primarily at Warner Bros. and MGM. His credits include *Ocean's Eleven* (1960), *Cool Hand Luke* (1967), *House of Wax* (1953), *Calamity Jane* (1953) and *Gypsy* (1962). He received five Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design, all in the black-and-white category.

Shoup was a co-founder of the Costume Designers Guild in 1966. He was the long-term romantic partner of artist Sascha Brastoff and designed costumes for Judy Garland's 1961 Carnegie Hall concert and 1962 television special.
