## Biography

Howland Chamberlain (also credited as Howland Chamberlin or Howard Chamberlain) was an American character actor. Born in the Bronx, New York, he began his career in theatre, working with the Federal Theatre Project and the Pasadena Playhouse before making his film debut in *The Best Years of Our Lives* (1946) as Thorpe.

Between 1947 and 1952 he appeared in numerous films, including *Force of Evil* (1948), *House by the River* (1950) and an uncredited role as the hotel clerk in *High Noon* (1952). He was blacklisted in the early 1950s and did not return to screen work until the 1970s.

Chamberlain resumed acting with television roles and stage work, including a part in the 1974 television film *A Touch of the Poet*. His later credits include Judge Atkins in *Kramer vs. Kramer* (1979), *Barbarosa* (1982) and *Electric Dreams* (1984). He died in Oakland, California, in 1984.
