## Biography

Hugh A. Robertson (1932–1988) was an American film editor and director. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jamaican parents, he became one of the first African American members of the Motion Picture Editors Union (IATSE Local 771) in 1960.

He edited *Midnight Cowboy* (1969), for which he received a BAFTA Award for Best Editing and an Academy Award nomination, the first for an African American in that category. His other editing credits include *Shaft* (1971). He later directed feature films including *Melinda* (1972) and *Bim* (1974), as well as television programmes and documentaries. He spent much of his later life in Trinidad and Tobago, where he established a filmmaking school.
