## Fi1m on Hugh Keays-Byrne

> Hugh Keays-Byrne made violent leaders persuasive through the force of his voice and the weight of his presence. We value the excess in his acting, particularly when George Miller gives it somewhere useful to go.

As Toecutter in *Mad Max* (1979), Hugh Keays-Byrne makes a biker gang's choice of leader understandable. His voice and physical presence make the menace hard to dismiss, but the attraction matters just as much. We found him unsettling because his charisma makes it plausible that people would choose to follow him. George Miller's road thriller has crude dialogue and uneven acting, and Keays-Byrne's intensity cannot tidy those up. It does give the human threat enough force to belong alongside chases in which the cars feel capable of doing lasting damage.

The two Miller films can obscure how often he worked in smaller parts. He made his film debut as Toad in the biker film *Stone* (1974), which led to his casting in *Mad Max*. The dramatic supporting part of Idris Williams in *Strikebound* (1983) belongs to the less conspicuous stretch of Australian film and television work that followed. There were other uses for that presence, even if the opportunities to carry a film were limited.

Miller brought him back as Immortan Joe in *Mad Max: Fury Road* (2015), exchanging the gang leader for a warlord. The larger character suits an actor whose physical force and voice were central to his appeal. This time the performance sits inside an action film that stays clear even when its desert chase is frantic. Charlize Theron gives the film purpose, while Keays-Byrne makes its central antagonist difficult to overlook. We recommend it readily, with the caveat that several supporting characters deserved more attention.

His presence does not solve every problem in either film. A strong antagonist cannot improve crude dialogue or supply the attention other supporting characters have been denied. What Miller gets right is to give that intensity a useful job: these leaders have to be convincing enough for the danger around them to feel real. Start with *Fury Road*; save *Mad Max* for an evening when rough edges will not spoil a good chase.
