## Fi1m on Hugh Quarshie

> Hugh Quarshie makes professional authority convincing, even when the writing has little use for it beyond keeping order. We value that steadiness; his long work as Ric Griffin deserves more attention than a judgement based only on Captain Panaka.

Give Hugh Quarshie responsibility for keeping people safe and the casting makes immediate sense. As Captain Panaka, head of security in George Lucas's *Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace* (1999), he has a clear idea of how to support the heroes. He conceived Panaka as tough enough to make the Jedi's greater toughness count. That is a practical actor's calculation, and we like the lack of vanity in the approach: he is thinking about what the audience should believe about the people beside him.

*The Phantom Menace* is nevertheless a poor place to judge the extent of his abilities. Its fine action cannot make the stiff conversations and lengthy explanations worth sitting through, and an actor supplying conviction still needs something worth saying. *Highlander* (1986), directed by Russell Mulcahy, is the more enjoyable of the two films, with Quarshie as the immortal warrior Sunda Kastagir. We had fun with it because the sword fights and Clancy Brown's excessive villain gave us enough to forgive the muddled storytelling. Neither film, though, should be allowed to stand for all his screen work.

His long stretch of leading television work came as Ric Griffin, the principled surgeon he played in *Holby City* from 2001 to 2020. More than 500 episodes make consistency a serious part of the job, and it is a quality we value in Quarshie. A continuing drama needs an actor who can make professional responsibility believable without treating every appearance as a special occasion. The limitation of such dependable authority is that it can encourage us to stop noticing the performance. His work with the Royal Shakespeare Company continued alongside television, including the title role in *Othello* (2015).

In *Stephen* (2021), he returned to Neville Lawrence, whom he had played in *The Murder of Stephen Lawrence* (1999). His convincing portrayals of a real person deserve consideration alongside the warriors and security chiefs. Start with *Highlander* if extravagant fantasy is the attraction. For a fuller sense of Quarshie's work, make time for Ric Griffin and Neville Lawrence.
