## Biography

Hugh Whitemore was an English playwright and screenwriter. Born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before turning to writing.

He began his career in British television in the 1960s, contributing original plays and adaptations to series including *Play for Today*. His screen credits include episodes of *Midsomer Murders* (1997) and adaptations such as *84 Charing Cross Road* (1987) and *Jane Eyre* (1996). Stage plays include *Stevie* (1977), *Pack of Lies* (1983) and *Breaking the Code* (1986).

Whitemore won Emmy Awards for *Concealed Enemies* (1984) and *The Gathering Storm* (2002), as well as Writers' Guild of Great Britain awards. He died in London in 2018.
