## Biography

Hugh Anthony Glanmor Williams (6 March 1904 – 7 December 1969) was an English actor and dramatist. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and appeared in his first film, *Charley's Aunt*, in 1930 while in Hollywood. He became a mainstay of British cinema in the 1930s, making dozens of film appearances between 1930 and 1967.

Williams is known for roles including James Steerforth in *David Copperfield* (1935), Hindley Earnshaw in *Wuthering Heights* (1939), Frank Shelley in *One of Our Aircraft Is Missing* (1942), and Lord Hartington in *Khartoum* (1966). He also wrote the screenplay for *The Grass Is Greener* (1960), on which he collaborated with his second wife, the actress Margaret Vyner. During the Second World War he served as a captain in the GHQ Liaison Regiment.
