He appeared in more than 60 films between 1926 and 1962 and directed 20 films between 1933 and 1962. Born in Brno, Moravia, then part of Austria-Hungary, Haas began his career on the stage, becoming a member of the Prague National Theatre company. He emigrated to the United States in 1940. In Hollywood he worked as a character actor and from 1951 directed a series of low-budget melodramas, often casting himself in the lead. Among his film credits are *The Fighting Kentuckian* (1949) and *King Solomon's Mines* (1950). His brother, the composer Pavel Haas, was killed in Auschwitz in 1944.
