## Biography

Hugo Haas was a Czech actor, film director and screenwriter. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1926 and 1962 and directed 20 films between 1933 and 1962.

Born in Brno, Moravia, then part of Austria-Hungary, Haas began his career on the stage, becoming a member of the Prague National Theatre company. He emigrated to the United States in 1940. In Hollywood he worked as a character actor and from 1951 directed a series of low-budget melodramas, often casting himself in the lead.

Among his film credits are *The Fighting Kentuckian* (1949) and *King Solomon's Mines* (1950). His brother, the composer Pavel Haas, was killed in Auschwitz in 1944. Haas died in Vienna in 1968.
