## Biography

Hylda Baker (1905–1986) was an English comedian, actress and music hall performer. Born in Farnworth, Lancashire, she made her professional stage debut at the age of ten and spent decades touring in variety and revues.

She appeared in films including *Saturday Night and Sunday Morning* (1960), in which she played Aunt Ada, and *Oliver!* (1968), as Mrs. Sowerberry. On television she starred as Nellie Pledge in the ITV sitcom *Nearest and Dearest* (1968–1973) and had her own series *Be Soon* (1957).

Baker first came to national attention with appearances on BBC's *The Good Old Days* in the mid-1950s.
