## Biography

Ian Bannen (29 June 1928 – 3 November 1999) was a Scottish stage and screen actor. He made his stage debut at the Gate Theatre, Dublin, in 1947 and was an original member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he performed in works by Shakespeare and Eugene O'Neill.

Bannen received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for *The Flight of the Phoenix* (1965), the first Scot to be nominated in the category. He was also nominated for BAFTA Awards for *The Offence* (1973) and *Hope and Glory* (1987). His television roles include Jim Prideaux in the BBC adaptation of *Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy* (1979). Later film appearances include Grandfather George in *Hope and Glory* (1987), Robert the Bruce Sr. in *Braveheart* (1995) and Jackie O'Shea in *Waking Ned* (1998), for which he received a Screen Actors Guild Award.
