## Biography

Ian Dalrymple (26 August 1903 – 28 March 1989) was a British screenwriter, film director, editor and producer. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his career in the film industry as an editor at Gainsborough Pictures and later at Gaumont-British.

By the mid-1930s he had turned to screenwriting. His credits include *The Citadel* (1938), *Pygmalion* (1938, for which he shared an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay), *South Riding* (1938) and *Q Planes* (1939). During the Second World War he served as a producer at the Crown Film Unit, where he worked with Humphrey Jennings. He later formed his own company, Wessex Productions, at Pinewood Studios.
