## Fi1m on Ian Holm

> Ian Holm gives quiet authority an unsettling edge, with enough precision to make a supporting part matter to the whole film. We rate that economy highly, even when the writing around him gives him too little help.

In *Alien* (1979), Ian Holm's Ash has the composure of a man who expects his professional judgement to carry weight. Holm gives the science officer authority without making a display of it, an economical way of establishing someone within an ensemble. We were uneasy watching him because his calm offers so little reassurance. Ridley Scott's patient build-up gives that restraint time to work, making confinement frightening before the shocks arrive. The crew could be more fully written, but Holm demonstrates how much an actor can contribute without being given the centre of the film.

That ability became the basis of a screen career built largely from character parts, rather than a succession of leads. After his first substantial film role in *The Bofors Gun* (1968), *Alien* brought wider notice, followed by Sam Mussabini, the trainer in *Chariots of Fire* (1981). The latter offered another use for his precision: quiet intensity in a real-life figure, with less need to make composure troubling. We would not count the size of those parts as a limitation. A supporting actor ought to help establish the people around him, and Holm's attention to detail makes that possible.

*Kafka* (1991) shows where such virtues stop being enough. As Dr. Murnau in Steven Soderbergh's film, Holm supplies a sinister presence, but we find the surrounding mystery too pulpy to sustain the dread it promises. The film is finely lit and well cast; neither quality makes its story more persuasive. Holm's presence belongs among those casting strengths, though it would be unfair to ask him to supply what the writing lacks.

The later work also gives us reasons not to reduce him to the unsettling professional. Atom Egoyan gave him the lead as lawyer Mitchell Stephens in *The Sweet Hereafter* (1997), while Bilbo Baggins in *The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring* (2001) placed him in Peter Jackson's fantasy ensemble. He remained recognisably himself there, which need not be a fault in an actor. For the clearest demonstration of what his restraint can do, start with *Alien*.

## Biography

Ian Holm was an English actor. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career on the British stage as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Holm received a Tony Award for his performance in the 1967 Broadway production of Harold Pinter's *The Homecoming*. He won BAFTA Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for *The Bofors Gun* (1968) and *Chariots of Fire* (1981), and was nominated for an Academy Award for the latter. He was appointed CBE in 1989 and knighted in 1998. His film roles include Ash in *Alien* (1979), Sam Mussabini in *Chariots of Fire* (1981), Cornelius in *The Fifth Element* (1997), and Bilbo Baggins in *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy (2001–2003) and *The Hobbit* films (2012–2014). He also appeared as Dr Murnau in *Kafka* (1991).
