## Biography

Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) was a Russian-born composer, pianist and conductor. He became a French citizen in 1934 and an American citizen in 1945.

Stravinsky studied law before training in composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. His early ballets *The Firebird* (1910), *Petrushka* (1911) and *The Rite of Spring* (1913), commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, established his international reputation. The premiere of *The Rite of Spring* in Paris provoked audience unrest.

He provided music for the Disney film *Fantasia* (1940), which featured *The Rite of Spring*. Later works include the opera *The Rake's Progress* (1951). Stravinsky died in New York on 6 April 1971.
