## Fi1m on Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson

> Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson has a face that foreign casting directors read as a threat and Icelandic directors read as a whole man. Give him a lead, or a supporting part written by someone who knows him, and he is as good as anyone working.

Watch Ragnar in *Godland* (2022) hold still for the priest's camera. He has been asked to do a thing, so he does it, exactly as asked and in the way least likely to please the man asking. Sigurðsson plays the guide as someone who made his mind up about the Dane in the first ten minutes and has not been given a reason to change it. Nothing about the performance is loud. The stillness is the joke, and the threat, and the whole character.

He has been doing this for thirty years, most of it at home. He came out of the Icelandic Theatre Academy in 1990, joined the National Theatre a year later, and worked through the decade in films by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson and Baltasar Kormákur. The lead in *Angels of the Universe* (2000) made his name in Iceland; *Jar City* (2006), as the detective Erlendur for Kormákur, confirmed it. *Trapped* (2015) was what carried him abroad, though not in the way the reputation suggests: Ásgeir handles the computer and the coffee while Ólafur Darri Ólafsson's Andri does the brooding, and Sigurðsson is funnier than a series that cold has any right to be. Since then the pattern has been steady Icelandic work with English-language supporting parts on the side.

The director who gets the most from him is Hlynur Pálmason. *A White, White Day* (2019) gave him a lead, a widower called Ingimundur, and the grief and anger in it are the performance most critics point to. *Godland* gives him less screen time and he is the best thing in the film. We laughed more than we expected to, mostly at him, and the laugh comes from watching a man obey to the letter while making perfectly plain what he thinks of the order. It is a hard thing to do without mugging. He does not mug.

The trouble is what happens when he leaves the island. Sigurðsson has said it himself: 'Somehow if you have a slight accent and a strong face, they seem to think: "Yeah, he'll be the bad guy."' The *Rebel Moon* films are the case in point, a heavy with a jaw and not much else to play. That is a waste of an actor who can hold a scene by doing nothing, and it is a waste the industry will keep making.

So look for him at home. Pálmason has now made three films with him and Kormákur three more, and between them they account for nearly everything worth seeing. If a fourth Pálmason film arrives with Sigurðsson's name on it, that is the one to clear an evening for.
