Born Irmgard Hermann on 4 October 1942 in Munich, she worked as a secretary before meeting Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 1966. He cast her, without formal training, in his short film *The City Tramp* and subsequently in around twenty of his films and theatre productions. She appeared as Marlene in *The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant* (1972) and as Krista in *Ali: Fear Eats the Soul* (1974). Other notable Fassbinder roles include Irmgard Epp in *The Merchant of Four Seasons* (1972), for which she received a Deutscher Filmpreis. She also worked with directors including Werner Herzog, Percy Adlon and Christoph Schlingensief, and performed extensively on stage and in television. Hermann won a second Deutscher Filmpreis for her role in Adlon’s *Five Last Days* (1982).
