He was born on 27 September 1958 in Leith, Edinburgh, and studied for an MBA at Heriot-Watt University. His debut novel *Trainspotting* (1993) was adapted into a film of the same name in 1996. He wrote the screenplay for the 1998 film adaptation of his short-story collection *The Acid House* (1994).
