He graduated from Harvard University in 1914 and began working in theatre, later studying at the Pasadena Playhouse where he gained acclaim for his performance in the title role of Eugene O’Neill’s *Lazarus Laughed* (1928). Pichel signed with Paramount and appeared as a character actor in numerous films during the 1930s, including *Jezebel* (1938) as Huger, *Dracula’s Daughter* (1936) as Sandor, *Cleopatra* (1934) as Apollodorus and *Juarez* (1939). He also directed films such as the co-directed *The Most Dangerous Game* (1932) and later works including *Destination Moon* (1950).
