Irving Ravetch was an American screenwriter and producer. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, on 14 November 1920 and died in Los Angeles on 19 September 2010. After studying at the University of California, Los Angeles, he joined the writers’ training programme at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where he met Harriet Frank Jr., whom he married in 1946. They collaborated on numerous screenplays.

Ravetch and Frank worked frequently with director Martin Ritt. Their credits include *The Long, Hot Summer* (1958), *Hud* (1963), *Hombre* (1967), *The Reivers* (1969), *Norma Rae* (1979), *Murphy’s Romance* (1985) and *Stanley & Iris* (1990). They also wrote *The Cowboys* (1972) and *Home from the Hill* (1960). Ravetch received Academy Award nominations for adapted screenplay for *Hud* and *Norma Rae*.
