## Biography

Isobel Lennart (18 May 1915 – 25 January 1971) was an American screenwriter and playwright. She began her career at MGM in the early 1940s after working as a script clerk and rose to become a contract writer. Her first credited screenplay was *The Affairs of Martha* (1942), followed by *A Stranger in Town* (1943) and *Anchors Aweigh* (1945).

Lennart wrote or co-wrote numerous films for major stars, including *Love Me or Leave Me* (1955), *The Inn of the Sixth Happiness* (1958), *Please Don't Eat the Daisies* (1960), *The Sundowners* (1960) and *Funny Girl* (1968). She also wrote the book for the Broadway musical *Funny Girl*, which premiered in 1964. She received Academy Award nominations for *Love Me or Leave Me* and *The Sundowners*, and won a Writers Guild of America Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement in 1966.
