She was born on 11 February 1905 in Matsue, Shimane prefecture, and died on 21 May 1989. She began her career in theatre in the late 1920s, joining left-wing groups including the Tokyo Left Theatre and later the Shin Kyodo Gekidan. She was arrested in 1940 during a crackdown on proletarian theatre. After the Second World War she worked increasingly in film and television, often in supporting roles as elderly women.
